Designe Reference
March 15, 2009
For the Website project, I have chosen ‘Stonefest’ as my content source. When designing a Website I think these are the most essential points, it firstly must be designed according to the personality of the subject (music festival) and then secondly content of the subject (musicians), thirdly the target audience and lastly my own interests in expressions (aesthetic).
‘Stonefest’ is going to be a music festival for 40th birth celebration of University of Canberra. It is not just a concert, it contains the purpose in the festival. Thus I think the web-site should emphasis that it is special day for the University of Canberra and also to them (students) as part of University. I have researched the musicians for the festival. In total, there are 17 musicians (including group as one) and they all seem to play modern style of music. Thus I think the main target audience will be students, thus the web-site doesn’t have to be formal, what I mean by this is it can be fun, funky and joyful or anything. I like to design a web-site simple but strong expression and clear. For the image creation, I might use pictures of mine or create them with Adobe Illustrator CS3.
For my design reference, I have collected these 5 web-sites:
- Tic a Tac Poker
- Empty Factory
- Tao Effect
- Versions
- June Cloud
(* These are not really related to my content source, but I have chosen them because they have the characteristics I want to express)
I haven’t randomly chosen them as my design references, I have critically considered the characteristics (both functional and aesthetical) they possess. Thus here are the characteristics:
+ Functional
- Search bar
- Auto column separation
- 100 % functional link
- Image preview
- Various font type and differing font size
- HTML based
- Horizontal and vertical scroll bar
+ Aesthetical
- Huge contrast with background
- Well use of typography (according to concept)
- Use of different colours
- Cleanliness & Simplicity
- Defined Structure
- Harmony between word and image
- Graphic icons
These are the images of the 5 design reference:
1. Empty factory
http://emptyfactory.com/invoy/

This web used extremely good contrast between text, background and image (the box). Text in column bar seems a bit small but due to the black and white contrast, it can stand out clearly. I really like the simplicity of this web. Some websites are too much complicated and you don’t know which icons are belonging to which information.

A point I mostly like about this website is the layout of image. As you can see the box’s top is situated outside of the black background. It makes the image more real.
2. June Cloud

June Cloud is a great example showing the correct use of typography according to the persoanlity. The font ‘JuneCloud’ and ‘Delivery status touch’ express an image of soft cloud. Also the separation of the columes give impression of well organised website. With the text, they put highlight colored-bold text to emphasis the particular text. I think this is really good idea.

My favourite with this website is about its functional characteristic. As you can see from the image, they added search bar on the left top (good position) to offer audience information quickly and comfortably.
3. Tao Effect
http://www.taoeffect.com/espionage/

This website is really colorful. I think this style of design might be the most appropriate to the content source (Stonefest). It is really simply designed but the color from images and the contrast from background, creates brilliant look. On the middle side, whenever one of the content subject is selected, the subject text become brighter. I think this is really good feature I might apply onto mine.
*(But this website uses flash ability for entering the home page, which I might can not perform)

As you can see the image is really colourful. I really like the image. I think I need to research how to create this kind of image. It looks like picture a bit.
4. Tic A Tac Poker
http://www.ticatacgames.net/static/iphone_teaser/

The most you can see is green from the website ‘Tic A Tac Poker’. The reason I chose this is I persoanlly love the color green, since it remines me feeling of fresh and also make my eye comfortable. Other than the color, I like the layout of the three i-Phone images in the middle and the flying cards at the back. Through this, I have learned, good lay-out of images can make the entire layout. But I think the color of text is a bit wrong. The text color shouldn’t be too bright. The text doesn’t stand out and it makes hard to read.

The best thing I like about this website is, the way they illustrated their brand name and the position of it. On the right top you can see it. It is beautifully illustrated and situated.
5. Versions

This is also simply designed website, but has strong visual effect within harmory from the text and the image. In the middle, big size font of brand name and the image graps audience’s attention. The way they express the image is really interesting. They redueced the opacity of the image outside. This makes the feeling of the specific area is spot lighted. It seems to be done by Adobe Photoshop. I might apply this method onto my image.
![]()
A characteristic I want to comment importantly about this website is situated on the top. The graphical icons are used. In my opinion, these icons are really useful. Because adding image makes more easy to understand what that link does. It also creates interest from viewers.
